Overview

PolarDB is Alibaba Cloud's cloud-native relational database, conceptually similar to Amazon Aurora: compute nodes share a distributed storage layer (PolarFS) over RDMA, so read nodes can be added in minutes without copying data. It comes in PolarDB for MySQL, PolarDB for PostgreSQL and an Oracle-compatible PostgreSQL edition, with serverless scaling, an in-memory column index (IMCI) for analytics and Global Database Network for cross-region reads. A separate distributed edition, PolarDB-X, handles shared-nothing sharding. It is the default high-end relational choice inside Alibaba Cloud, especially in China and Southeast Asia; outside that ecosystem it offers little reason to switch.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Shared storage over RDMA lets read nodes be added in minutes without data copies
  • +In-memory column index (IMCI) speeds analytics on transactional tables
  • +MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle-compatible editions under one service
  • +Serverless scaling and Global Database Network for cross-region reads
  • +Flashback query to recover from accidental writes

Trade-offs

  • −Only available on Alibaba Cloud
  • −Single writer per cluster unless you move to multi-master or PolarDB-X
  • −English documentation and community resources are thinner than AWS/GCP equivalents
  • −Feature parity differs between MySQL and PostgreSQL editions

Great for

  • +E-commerce and gaming backends on Alibaba Cloud
  • +Oracle migrations in Chinese enterprises
  • +Read-heavy apps needing fast replica scaling
  • +HTAP reporting with IMCI

Think twice for

  • −Workloads outside Alibaba Cloud
  • −Open-source or self-hosted requirements
  • −Very write-heavy sharded workloads (use PolarDB-X)

Alibaba PolarDB FAQ

What is Alibaba PolarDB?

Alibaba PolarDB is a relational database by Alibaba Cloud, first released in 2017.

Is Alibaba PolarDB open source?

No. Alibaba PolarDB is proprietary, closed-source software.

Does Alibaba PolarDB support ACID transactions?

Yes. Alibaba PolarDB supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does Alibaba PolarDB scale horizontally?

Alibaba PolarDB scales horizontally through an official extension, proxy or edition rather than in the core engine. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB). It supports cross-region read replicas.

How can I run Alibaba PolarDB?

You can use the vendor's managed cloud and run it serverless. Managed offerings include PolarDB. It is available on Alibaba Cloud.

What is Alibaba PolarDB best for?

Alibaba PolarDB is a strong fit for E-commerce and gaming backends on Alibaba Cloud; oracle migrations in Chinese enterprises; and read-heavy apps needing fast replica scaling. Think twice for workloads outside Alibaba Cloud.

What are the best alternatives to Alibaba PolarDB?

Common alternatives to Alibaba PolarDB include PolarDB-X, Amazon Aurora, OceanBase, TDSQL (Tencent) and AlloyDB for PostgreSQL. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is Alibaba PolarDB?

Alibaba PolarDB ranks #461 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (2.7/100), and #144 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
