Overview

GaussDB is Huawei's commercial relational database, available as a Huawei Cloud service and as on-premises software, in centralized and distributed (shared-nothing) deployments. Its kernel is the same lineage as the open-source openGauss, which itself started from PostgreSQL 9.2 but has diverged heavily (thread model, Ustore engine, MOT in-memory tables). Huawei markets it for 'two-city, three-centre' high availability, Oracle and MySQL compatibility modes and PB-scale clusters, and it is widely adopted by Chinese banks under the domestic-technology push. 2026 updates added a native vector retrieval engine and cross-page compression. Outside China, availability, documentation and ecosystem are limited.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Distributed shared-nothing edition scales to very large clusters with strong consistency
  • +Oracle- and MySQL-compatibility modes ease migration of existing applications
  • +Cross-AZ and multi-city disaster recovery designed for bank regulators
  • +Same lineage as open-source openGauss, so skills partially transfer

Trade-offs

  • −Mainly available on Huawei Cloud and in China; limited global presence
  • −Documentation and community are predominantly Chinese
  • −Heavily diverged from PostgreSQL, so most PG extensions do not apply

Great for

  • +Core banking replacement of Oracle in China
  • +Government and telecom systems under domestic-technology mandates
  • +Large distributed OLTP on Huawei Cloud

Think twice for

  • −Deployments on AWS, Azure or GCP
  • −Teams relying on the PostgreSQL extension ecosystem
  • −Small projects

Outside China, availability, documentation and ecosystem are limited.

Is Huawei GaussDB open source?

No. Huawei GaussDB is proprietary, closed-source software.

Does Huawei GaussDB support ACID transactions?

Yes. Huawei GaussDB supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does Huawei GaussDB scale horizontally?

Huawei GaussDB scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB). It supports cross-region read replicas.

How can I run Huawei GaussDB?

You can self-host it and use the vendor's managed cloud. Managed offerings include GaussDB. It is available on Huawei Cloud.

What is Huawei GaussDB best for?

Huawei GaussDB is a strong fit for core banking replacement of Oracle in China; government and telecom systems under domestic-technology mandates; and large distributed OLTP on Huawei Cloud. Think twice for deployments on AWS, Azure or GCP.

What are the best alternatives to Huawei GaussDB?

Common alternatives to Huawei GaussDB include openGauss, OceanBase, TiDB, Alibaba PolarDB and TDSQL (Tencent). The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is Huawei GaussDB?

Huawei GaussDB ranks #351 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (6.8/100), and #111 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
