Overview

OceanBase is a shared-nothing distributed relational database originally built inside Ant Group to run Alipay's payment core, now developed by OceanBase as an independent company. It partitions tables across zones, replicates each partition with Paxos, and stores data in an LSM-tree engine with strong compression, which keeps storage costs low at very large scale. The open-source Community Edition is MySQL-compatible; the Enterprise Edition adds Oracle-compatible tenants, which is why it is a frequent Oracle replacement in Chinese banking. Recent 4.x/5.x releases add columnar storage, materialized views, full-text and vector search, so one cluster can cover OLTP, real-time analytics and AI retrieval.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Proven at Alipay/Double-11 scale with RPO=0 Paxos replication
  • +LSM storage with aggressive compression cuts disk cost versus B-tree MySQL
  • +Oracle-compatible tenants (Enterprise) ease Oracle migrations
  • +Row and columnar storage in one engine for HTAP
  • +Multi-tenant resource isolation inside a single cluster
  • +Built-in vector and full-text indexes for AI retrieval

Trade-offs

  • −Oracle compatibility and some tooling are Enterprise-only
  • −Operational tooling and much documentation are Chinese-first
  • −Heavy minimum footprint for small deployments
  • −Smaller Western community and ecosystem than TiDB or CockroachDB

Great for

  • +Core banking and payment systems
  • +Oracle-to-distributed-SQL migrations
  • +Consolidating many MySQL instances into one multi-tenant cluster
  • +HTAP reporting on live order data
  • +Hybrid search for RAG applications

Think twice for

  • −Small apps that fit on a single MySQL instance
  • −Teams needing Oracle compatibility without an enterprise license
  • −Embedded or edge deployments

Is OceanBase open source?

Yes. OceanBase is open source. License: Apache License 2.0 (Community Edition).

Does OceanBase support ACID transactions?

Yes. OceanBase supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does OceanBase scale horizontally?

OceanBase scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at massive scale (Multi-PB). It supports active-active multi-region writes.

How can I run OceanBase?

You can self-host it and use the vendor's managed cloud. Managed offerings include OceanBase Cloud and ApsaraDB for OceanBase. It is available on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Alibaba Cloud and Huawei Cloud.

What is OceanBase best for?

OceanBase is a strong fit for core banking and payment systems; oracle-to-distributed-SQL migrations; and consolidating many MySQL instances into one multi-tenant cluster. Think twice for small apps that fit on a single MySQL instance.

What are the best alternatives to OceanBase?

Common alternatives to OceanBase include TiDB, PolarDB-X, TDSQL (Tencent), CockroachDB and MySQL. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is OceanBase?

OceanBase ranks #168 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (19.4/100), and #54 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
