IBM Cloudant
activeby IBM · since 2010 · also known as Cloudant
IBM's managed, CouchDB-compatible JSON database with built-in search and geospatial queries.
Overview
IBM Cloudant is a fully managed JSON document database on IBM Cloud, built on Apache CouchDB and API-compatible with it, including the replication protocol. Cloudant contributed much of CouchDB's clustering code before IBM acquired the company in 2014. On top of CouchDB it offers provisioned throughput capacity, Lucene-based full-text search, geospatial indexing, IAM integration and BYOK encryption via Key Protect, with replication across availability zones. It makes most sense for IBM Cloud shops and for apps that want CouchDB-style sync to PouchDB or on-prem CouchDB without running the cluster.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +CouchDB replication means you can sync to PouchDB, CouchDB or another Cloudant
- +Full-text and geospatial search built in, no separate search cluster
- +Provisioned throughput gives predictable performance and cost
- +IAM and Key Protect (BYOK) integration for regulated workloads
Trade-offs
- −Tied to IBM Cloud, which has a smaller ecosystem than AWS, Azure or GCP
- −Inherits CouchDB's lack of multi-document transactions
- −Throughput limits return 429s that apps must back off from
- −Fewer SDKs than in the past; older community libraries are deprecated
Great for
- +Mobile apps syncing via PouchDB
- +IoT data ingestion on IBM Cloud
- +Hybrid setups replicating between on-prem CouchDB and the cloud
Think twice for
- −Workloads needing ACID transactions across documents
- −Teams standardised on another hyperscaler

What is IBM Cloudant?
IBM Cloudant is a document database by IBM, first released in 2010.
Is IBM Cloudant open source?
No. IBM Cloudant is proprietary, closed-source software.
Does IBM Cloudant support ACID transactions?
Partly. IBM Cloudant offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with eventual consistency.
Does IBM Cloudant scale horizontally?
IBM Cloudant scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB). It supports active-active multi-region writes.
How can I run IBM Cloudant?
You can use the vendor's managed cloud. It is available on IBM Cloud.
What is IBM Cloudant best for?
IBM Cloudant is a strong fit for mobile apps syncing via PouchDB; IoT data ingestion on IBM Cloud; and hybrid setups replicating between on-prem CouchDB and the cloud. Think twice for workloads needing ACID transactions across documents.
What are the best alternatives to IBM Cloudant?
Common alternatives to IBM Cloudant include Apache CouchDB, PouchDB, Google Cloud Firestore, Azure Cosmos DB and MongoDB Atlas. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is IBM Cloudant?
IBM Cloudant ranks #77 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (31.6/100), and #7 among document databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
