Google Cloud Firestore
activeby Google · since 2017 · also known as Firestore, Cloud Firestore, Firestore with MongoDB compatibility
Serverless document database with realtime listeners, offline SDKs and a new Enterprise edition.
Overview
Firestore is Google Cloud's serverless document database, also sold as part of Firebase. It stores documents in collections and subcollections, runs on Spanner-class infrastructure with strongly consistent multi-region replication, and gives mobile and web clients realtime listeners, offline caching and security rules. The Enterprise edition, generally available in 2026, adds a MongoDB-compatible mode and a Pipeline query interface with joins, plus text and geospatial search (GA October 2026). Standard Firestore still requires an index for every query shape. It is the default for Firebase-style apps that want zero ops and pay-per-operation pricing.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Truly serverless: no capacity planning, scales to zero cost at idle
- +Realtime listeners and offline persistence in the Firebase SDKs
- +Security Rules let clients talk to the database directly
- +Strongly consistent, ACID transactions even in multi-region mode
- +Enterprise edition adds MongoDB compatibility, joins and text search
- +Point-in-time recovery and reads at a past timestamp
Trade-offs
- −Per-operation billing can explode with chatty listeners or fan-out reads
- −Standard edition has limited query expressiveness and needs composite indexes for most filters
- −Write rate limits on individual documents and on sequential keys
- −GCP-only, with proprietary APIs outside the Enterprise MongoDB mode
Great for
- +Mobile and web apps built on Firebase
- +Realtime collaborative features and chat
- +User profiles and app state with offline support
- +Serverless backends on Cloud Run or Cloud Functions
Think twice for
- −Analytics and aggregation-heavy workloads
- −High-frequency counters or hot single documents
- −Workloads needing multi-cloud portability
