Couchbase's managed DBaaS: Couchbase Server clusters plus App Services sync and AI tooling.

Overview

Couchbase Capella is the fully managed form of Couchbase Server on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. Couchbase runs the clusters, upgrades and backups, and you keep SQL++, the memory-first key-value path, full-text and vector search, and XDCR. Capella adds App Services, which syncs data to Couchbase Lite on mobile and edge devices, plus Capella Analytics for columnar analysis and Capella iQ for AI-assisted query writing. New operational clusters run Couchbase Server 8.0.3 as of September 2026. It suits teams that want Couchbase's latency and offline-sync story without operating a multi-service cluster themselves.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Couchbase's memory-first latency without running the cluster yourself
  • +App Services provides managed sync to Couchbase Lite for offline-first apps
  • +Available on all three major clouds with XDCR between them
  • +Customer-managed keys, private networking and fine-grained RBAC

Trade-offs

  • −Pricing is opaque compared with per-request serverless databases
  • −No true serverless or scale-to-zero option for operational clusters
  • −Smaller ecosystem of integrations than Atlas or the hyperscaler services

Great for

  • +Managed backends for mobile apps with offline sync
  • +Low-latency profile, session and catalog stores
  • +Multi-cloud deployments using XDCR

Think twice for

  • −Hobby projects that outgrow the free tier but have tiny budgets
  • −Teams that need to run on-premises (use Couchbase Server)
