YugabyteDB
activeby Yugabyte, Inc. · since 2017 · also known as Yugabyte, YSQL, YCQL
Apache-licensed distributed SQL that reuses the PostgreSQL query layer on a Raft-replicated storage engine.
Overview
YugabyteDB is a distributed database that grafts the actual PostgreSQL query layer (YSQL) onto DocDB, a sharded, Raft-replicated storage engine derived from RocksDB. Because it reuses Postgres code rather than reimplementing it, compatibility with triggers, stored procedures, extensions like pgvector and most ORMs is unusually high for a distributed system. A second API, YCQL, speaks the Cassandra query language for wide-column workloads. It is a sensible pick when you want Postgres semantics plus horizontal write scaling and multi-region resilience under a permissive license, and you can accept somewhat higher per-query latency than single-node Postgres.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Reuses PostgreSQL's own query layer, so triggers, stored procedures and many extensions work
- +Fully Apache 2.0 database core, including enterprise-grade features like encryption and xCluster
- +Synchronous multi-region writes or async xCluster replication, chosen per deployment
- +Cassandra-compatible YCQL API alongside SQL in the same cluster
- +Online tablet splitting and rebalancing as nodes are added
Trade-offs
- −Higher latency per statement than single-node Postgres, especially for chatty ORMs
- −Postgres version lags upstream (YSQL tracks an older major release)
- −Cross-shard joins and foreign keys can be slow without careful colocation
- −Operational footprint (masters, tservers, tuning flags) is heavier than plain Postgres
Great for
- +Scaling a Postgres application beyond one primary
- +Multi-region customer and order data with zone/region resilience
- +Retail and financial OLTP needing horizontal write capacity
- +IoT and telemetry metadata with TTL on YCQL tables
- +Migrating off Cassandra while gaining SQL
Think twice for
- −Analytics-heavy workloads with large scans
- −Small single-region apps where Postgres is simpler
- −Ultra-low-latency key-value caching

What is YugabyteDB?
YugabyteDB is a relational database by Yugabyte, Inc., first released in 2017.
Is YugabyteDB open source?
Yes. YugabyteDB is open source. License: Apache License 2.0.
Does YugabyteDB support ACID transactions?
Yes. YugabyteDB supports full ACID transactions, with strong, tunable consistency.
Does YugabyteDB scale horizontally?
YugabyteDB scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB). It supports active-active multi-region writes.
How can I run YugabyteDB?
You can self-host it and use the vendor's managed cloud. Managed offerings include YugabyteDB Aeon. It is available on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.
What is YugabyteDB best for?
YugabyteDB is a strong fit for scaling a Postgres application beyond one primary; multi-region customer and order data with zone/region resilience; and retail and financial OLTP needing horizontal write capacity. Think twice for analytics-heavy workloads with large scans.
What are the best alternatives to YugabyteDB?
Common alternatives to YugabyteDB include CockroachDB, PostgreSQL, TiDB, Google Cloud Spanner and Citus. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is YugabyteDB?
YugabyteDB ranks #69 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (32.7/100), and #21 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
