Vespa
activeby Vespa.ai · since 2017 · also known as Vespa.ai
Big-data serving engine for search, recommendation and RAG with tensors and ML ranking.
Overview
Vespa came out of Yahoo, where it powered search and recommendation at internet scale, and has been run by the independent company Vespa.ai since 2023. It combines full-text, structured, vector and tensor data in one engine and evaluates ML ranking models (ONNX, XGBoost, LightGBM, multi-phase ranking) on the content nodes, next to the data, so you can rank thousands of candidates per query without shipping them to another service. That makes it the strongest choice for sophisticated hybrid retrieval and personalization, at the cost of a steep learning curve and a heavyweight deployment model.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Ranks with ML models and tensor math on the data nodes, not in a separate service
- +True hybrid retrieval: BM25, ANN, multi-vector (ColBERT) and structured filters in one query
- +Real-time writes with immediate searchability at very high throughput
- +Proven at Yahoo scale
- +Apache-2.0 with a capable managed cloud
Trade-offs
- −Steep learning curve: application packages, schemas and rank profiles
- −Heavy footprint for small projects
- −Smaller community than Elasticsearch
- −No official Kubernetes operator for self-hosting
Great for
- +Large-scale hybrid search and RAG retrieval
- +Recommendation and personalization feeds
- +Ad serving and ranking
- +E-commerce search with learned ranking
Think twice for
- −Small apps needing a simple search box
- −Log analytics
- −Teams without search/ML engineering capacity

What is Vespa?
Vespa is a search engine database by Vespa.ai, first released in 2017.
Is Vespa open source?
Yes. Vespa is open source. License: Apache License 2.0.
Does Vespa support ACID transactions?
Partly. Vespa offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with eventual consistency.
Does Vespa scale horizontally?
Vespa scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at massive scale (Multi-PB). It supports cross-region read replicas.
How can I run Vespa?
You can self-host it and use the vendor's managed cloud. Managed offerings include Vespa Cloud. It is available on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.
What is Vespa best for?
Vespa is a strong fit for large-scale hybrid search and RAG retrieval; recommendation and personalization feeds; and ad serving and ranking. Think twice for small apps needing a simple search box.
What are the best alternatives to Vespa?
Common alternatives to Vespa include Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Weaviate, Milvus and Qdrant. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is Vespa?
Vespa ranks #127 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (23.8/100), and #11 among search engine databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
