Marqo
activeby Marqo · since 2022 · also known as Marqo AI
End-to-end tensor search engine that embeds text and images for you, built on Vespa.
Overview
Marqo is an open-source search engine that handles the full vector pipeline: you send raw text or image URLs, and Marqo chunks, embeds (with CLIP, E5, BGE and other models, on CPU or GPU) and indexes them in Vespa, then serves hybrid lexical plus tensor search. That removes a lot of glue code for multimodal search. Since 2025 the company has concentrated on a commercial AI e-commerce product discovery platform, while the open-source engine continues on a slower cadence (2.26 in April 2026). Good for multimodal prototypes and self-hosted image or product search.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Built-in embedding inference: index raw text and images directly
- +Multimodal search with CLIP-style models out of the box
- +Hybrid lexical plus tensor ranking via Vespa
- +Simple Docker deployment
Trade-offs
- −Company focus has shifted to its e-commerce SaaS
- −Bundled inference makes containers heavy and GPU-hungry
- −Less control than running Vespa directly
- −Smaller community than Weaviate or Qdrant
Great for
- +Multimodal product and image search
- +Prototyping semantic search without an embedding pipeline
- +E-commerce discovery
Think twice for
- −Teams that already have an embedding pipeline and want a lean vector store
- −Very large distributed deployments
- −Analytics

What is Marqo?
Marqo is a vector database by Marqo, first released in 2022.
Is Marqo open source?
Yes. Marqo is open source. License: Apache License 2.0.
Does Marqo support ACID transactions?
No. Marqo does not provide ACID transactions; its consistency model is eventual.
Does Marqo scale horizontally?
Marqo scales horizontally through an official extension, proxy or edition rather than in the core engine. It is comfortable at medium scale (≤ 10 TB).
How can I run Marqo?
You can self-host it and use the vendor's managed cloud. Managed offerings include Marqo Ecommerce Search.
What is Marqo best for?
Marqo is a strong fit for multimodal product and image search; prototyping semantic search without an embedding pipeline; and E-commerce discovery. Think twice for teams that already have an embedding pipeline and want a lean vector store.
What are the best alternatives to Marqo?
Common alternatives to Marqo include Vespa, Weaviate, Qdrant, Elasticsearch and Algolia. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is Marqo?
Marqo ranks #229 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (14.5/100), and #15 among vector databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
