Vercel's globally replicated read-optimized config store (renamed Global Config in 2026).

Overview

Edge Config is a small, globally replicated key-value store on Vercel designed for data that is read on almost every request and written rarely: feature flags, A/B test buckets, redirects, IP blocklists. Reads typically finish in about a millisecond from any region because the data is pushed to Vercel's compute locations. In July 2026 Vercel renamed it Global Config, shipped @vercel/global-config as a drop-in SDK and raised store size to 1 MB on every plan; existing EDGE_CONFIG projects keep working. Write limits (about 100 per hour on paid plans) make it unsuitable for anything transactional.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Around 1 ms reads from every Vercel region
  • +No connection setup; reads are served from Vercel's compute locations
  • +Integrates with Vercel's flags SDK and third-party flag providers
  • +Simple JSON values managed via dashboard, API or CLI

Trade-offs

  • −Tiny stores (1 MB) and strict write limits
  • −Eventually consistent propagation after writes
  • −Only usable from Vercel deployments in practice
  • −Rename to Global Config means two SDK names in the wild

Great for

  • +Feature flags and A/B experiment assignments
  • +Redirect and rewrite tables
  • +IP and bot blocklists
  • +Maintenance-mode and kill switches

Think twice for

  • −User data or frequently written values
  • −Anything above 1 MB
  • −Workloads outside Vercel
