Deno KV

deprecated

by Deno Land Inc. · since 2023 · also known as Deno.Kv, denokv

Key-value store built into the Deno runtime; its hosted backend ends with Deno Deploy in 2027.

key-valuedatabase engineopen source (permissive)growing

deprecated. Deno announced (Oct 9, 2026) its team is joining Cloudflare; Deno Deploy, the hosted KV backend, shuts down ~6 months later. Self-hosted denokv remains MIT. Consider Durable Objects or Workers KV.

Overview

Deno KV is a key-value database exposed directly in the Deno runtime as Deno.openKv(): keys are ordered tuples, values are structured-cloneable JavaScript, and atomic operations give optimistic-concurrency transactions. Locally it is backed by SQLite; on Deno Deploy it was backed by a globally replicated FoundationDB-based service, and the open-source denokv server lets you self-host it. On 9 October 2026 Deno announced its team is joining Cloudflare and that Deno Deploy will shut down six months later; the runtime gets one more year of maintenance releases. The hosted KV service therefore has an end date, and new projects should choose another store.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Zero setup: built into the Deno runtime with no dependencies
  • +Atomic operations with versionstamp checks for optimistic transactions
  • +Ordered tuple keys make prefix and range listing natural
  • +Watch API for change notifications and expireIn for TTL
  • +Self-hostable via the open-source denokv server and npm client

Trade-offs

  • −Hosted backend ends with Deno Deploy's shutdown (~April 2027)
  • −Queues (enqueue/listenQueue) were already unsupported on the new Deno Deploy
  • −Small values (64 KiB) and keys (2 KiB) limits
  • −No secondary indexes or query language

Great for

  • +Prototypes and small Deno apps needing persistence
  • +Local development storage for Deno tools
  • +Self-hosted denokv for existing Deno KV codebases

Think twice for

  • −New long-lived production projects
  • −Large datasets or analytics
  • −Non-Deno runtimes (beyond the npm client)

Deno KV FAQ

What is Deno KV?

Deno KV is a key-value database by Deno Land Inc., first released in 2023.

Is Deno KV open source?

Yes. Deno KV is open source. License: MIT License.

Does Deno KV support ACID transactions?

Partly. Deno KV offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with strong, eventual consistency.

Does Deno KV scale horizontally?

Deno KV does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at small scale (≤ 100 GB).

How can I run Deno KV?

You can self-host it, embed it in your application, use the vendor's managed cloud, run it serverless and run it at the edge. Managed offerings include Deno Deploy KV.

What is Deno KV best for?

Deno KV is a strong fit for prototypes and small Deno apps needing persistence; local development storage for Deno tools; and self-hosted denokv for existing Deno KV codebases. Think twice for new long-lived production projects.

What are the best alternatives to Deno KV?

Common alternatives to Deno KV include Cloudflare Durable Objects, Cloudflare Workers KV, Upstash, Turso and Vercel Edge Config. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

Is Deno KV still maintained?

Deno KV is deprecated. Deno announced (Oct 9, 2026) its team is joining Cloudflare; Deno Deploy, the hosted KV backend, shuts down ~6 months later. Self-hosted denokv remains MIT. Consider Durable Objects or Workers KV.

How popular is Deno KV?

Deno KV ranks #320 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (8.9/100), and #43 among key-value databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
