SpreadsheetDB
discontinuedby Eurisko · since 2017
Short-lived hosted service that aggregated pushed JSON records with spreadsheet formulas over an HTTP API.
discontinued. Service ended around 2018; spreadsheetdb.io no longer resolves and only a JavaScript client survives on GitHub.
Overview
SpreadsheetDB was a small French database-as-a-service, run by Eurisko around 2017, that mixed a document store with a spreadsheet engine. You pushed schemaless JSON records over an HTTP API, defined spreadsheets whose cells held formulas such as SUM, COUNT or MAX over those records (plus JSONGET to pull external data), and read the computed results as JSON or CSV or through a JavaScript library for charts on web pages. It had a free volume-limited plan and paid plans, but archived pages stop in late 2017 and the domain no longer resolves. It is gone; the idea now lives on in spreadsheet-database tools and SQL over JSON.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Spreadsheet formulas as a query language were approachable for non-developers
- +Schemaless JSON ingestion with results exported as JSON or CSV
Trade-offs
- −Service shut down; data and API are gone
- −Hosted-only and proprietary
- −Limited query power compared with SQL
Great for
- +Historical reference only
- +Example of spreadsheet-style aggregation over JSON records
Think twice for
- −Any production workload: the service no longer exists

Is SpreadsheetDB open source?
No. SpreadsheetDB is proprietary, closed-source software.
Does SpreadsheetDB support ACID transactions?
No. SpreadsheetDB does not provide ACID transactions; its consistency model is eventual.
Does SpreadsheetDB scale horizontally?
SpreadsheetDB does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at small scale (≤ 100 GB).
What is SpreadsheetDB best for?
SpreadsheetDB is a strong fit for historical reference only and example of spreadsheet-style aggregation over JSON records. Think twice for any production workload: the service no longer exists.
What are the best alternatives to SpreadsheetDB?
Common alternatives to SpreadsheetDB include Supabase, Google Cloud Firestore, DuckDB, Microsoft Access and PouchDB. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
Is SpreadsheetDB still maintained?
SpreadsheetDB is discontinued. Service ended around 2018; spreadsheetdb.io no longer resolves and only a JavaScript client survives on GitHub.
How popular is SpreadsheetDB?
SpreadsheetDB has little measurable public adoption today, so it ranks near the bottom of the WhichDB Score.
