Sybase's pioneering columnar warehouse, now SAP IQ and the engine behind HANA Cloud's data lake.

Overview

SAP IQ, formerly Sybase IQ, was one of the first commercial column-store databases, shipping in the mid-1990s with bitmap-style indexes and heavy compression for read-mostly analytics. Its multiplex architecture lets several nodes share the same storage for scale-out reads and loads. SAP now positions it mainly as a cost-efficient warm store next to SAP HANA, as the data lake relational engine in SAP HANA Cloud, and for near-line storage in SAP BW. It is stable and proven but legacy: new non-SAP analytics projects almost never start on it.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Mature, heavily compressed column store for read-mostly analytics
  • +Many specialised index types for fast filtering
  • +Integrates with SAP HANA, BW and Data Services
  • +Multiplex shared-storage scale-out

Trade-offs

  • −Legacy product with little innovation outside the SAP stack
  • −Proprietary licensing tied to SAP agreements
  • −Small talent pool and community

Great for

  • +Warm and near-line storage for SAP BW and HANA
  • +Existing Sybase IQ warehouses
  • +SAP HANA Cloud data lake

Think twice for

  • −New non-SAP analytics platforms
