SAP HANA

active

by SAP SE · since 2010 · also known as HANA, SAP HANA Cloud, HANA 2.0

SAP's in-memory columnar HTAP database, the mandatory engine under S/4HANA.

Overview

SAP HANA is an in-memory, column-oriented database that runs transactions and analytics on the same tables, and it is the only database supported by S/4HANA, which is why most of its installed base is SAP customers. Beyond SQL it bundles graph, spatial, JSON document store, a vector engine and a knowledge-graph engine, and HANA Cloud adds a data lake tier and native storage extension for warm data. On-premises customers run HANA 2.0 SPS08; HANA Cloud ships quarterly releases. Outside SAP landscapes it is rarely chosen, because RAM-sized licensing and hardware make it costly and the ecosystem is SAP-centric.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Columnar in-memory storage runs analytical queries directly on live transactional data
  • +Required and fully optimised for S/4HANA and SAP BW/4HANA
  • +Multi-model in one engine: graph, spatial, JSON documents, vectors and knowledge graphs
  • +Dictionary compression keeps column data several times smaller than row stores
  • +System replication gives near-zero-RPO failover for SAP landscapes

Trade-offs

  • −Memory-based licensing and certified hardware make it expensive
  • −Ecosystem and skills are concentrated in SAP projects
  • −Large instances have long restart/load times despite persistence
  • −Rarely a sensible choice for non-SAP greenfield applications

Great for

  • +Running SAP S/4HANA and BW/4HANA
  • +Real-time operational reporting on ERP data
  • +Embedding analytics and ML (PAL/APL) in SAP business processes
  • +Grounding SAP Joule/AI scenarios with the vector and knowledge-graph engines

Think twice for

  • −Non-SAP applications on a budget
  • −Datasets far larger than affordable RAM
  • −Teams wanting open-source tooling and portability

SAP HANA FAQ

What is SAP HANA?

SAP HANA is a relational database by SAP SE, first released in 2010.

Is SAP HANA open source?

No. SAP HANA is proprietary, closed-source software.

Does SAP HANA support ACID transactions?

Yes. SAP HANA supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does SAP HANA scale horizontally?

SAP HANA scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB). It supports cross-region read replicas.

How can I run SAP HANA?

You can self-host it and use the vendor's managed cloud. Managed offerings include SAP HANA Cloud. It is available on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and Alibaba Cloud.

What is SAP HANA best for?

SAP HANA is a strong fit for running SAP S/4HANA and BW/4HANA; real-time operational reporting on ERP data; and embedding analytics and ML (PAL/APL) in SAP business processes. Think twice for non-SAP applications on a budget.

What are the best alternatives to SAP HANA?

Common alternatives to SAP HANA include Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM Db2, SingleStore and Snowflake. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is SAP HANA?

SAP HANA ranks #48 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (39.7/100), and #13 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
