Swedish standards-strict SQL engine built for embedded, automotive and real-time systems.

Overview

Mimer SQL grew out of Uppsala University in the 1970s and is now developed by Mimer Information Technology in Sweden. It is unusually faithful to the ISO SQL standard (version 11 implements SQL:2016 core plus many optional features), uses optimistic concurrency so readers never block writers, and has a real-time edition with predictable latency for automotive and industrial controllers. The same engine scales from tiny embedded targets on Linux, RISC-V and OpenVMS up to enterprise servers. It is niche and commercially licensed, so pick it when you need a small, certifiable, standards-correct SQL database rather than a general web back end.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Very close adherence to the ISO SQL standard (SQL:2016 core and many optional features)
  • +Optimistic concurrency: readers never block writers and no lock tuning is needed
  • +Real-time edition with deterministic behaviour for automotive and industrial use
  • +Runs on unusual targets including Linux on RISC-V and OpenVMS

Trade-offs

  • −Tiny community and few third-party tools
  • −No built-in replication or horizontal scaling
  • −Commercial licence for production use

Great for

  • +In-vehicle infotainment and telematics data
  • +Industrial controllers needing predictable SQL
  • +OpenVMS application modernisation
  • +Teaching and testing standard SQL behaviour

Think twice for

  • −Web-scale SaaS back ends
  • −Analytics workloads
  • −Teams wanting a large open-source ecosystem

Mimer SQL FAQ

What is Mimer SQL?

Mimer SQL is a relational database by Mimer Information Technology AB, first released in 1978.

Is Mimer SQL open source?

No. Mimer SQL is proprietary, closed-source software.

Does Mimer SQL support ACID transactions?

Yes. Mimer SQL supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does Mimer SQL scale horizontally?

Mimer SQL does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at small scale (≤ 100 GB).

How can I run Mimer SQL?

You can self-host it, embed it in your application and run it at the edge.

What is Mimer SQL best for?

Mimer SQL is a strong fit for in-vehicle infotainment and telematics data; industrial controllers needing predictable SQL; and OpenVMS application modernisation. Think twice for web-scale SaaS back ends.

What are the best alternatives to Mimer SQL?

Common alternatives to Mimer SQL include SQLite, Raima Database Manager, ITTIA DB, Empress Embedded Database and PostgreSQL. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is Mimer SQL?

Mimer SQL ranks #322 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (8.6/100), and #104 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
