IBM Informix
activeby IBM (co-developed with HCLSoftware) · since 1981 · also known as Informix, Informix Dynamic Server, IDS
Low-maintenance embeddable RDBMS with built-in TimeSeries, still quietly running retail and telco systems.
Overview
Informix is a relational database known for running for years with almost no DBA attention, which made it popular for embedding in retail point-of-sale, telecom and utility systems. Its distinctive pieces are a native TimeSeries storage type that is very compact for meter and sensor data, MACH 11 high-availability clusters, Enterprise Replication for multi-site active-active, and a wire listener that speaks the MongoDB protocol. IBM still owns it and co-develops it with HCLSoftware; version 15 lifted many old size limits and fix packs ship regularly (15.0.1.18 in September 2026). It is a solid choice for existing estates but has a small community for new projects.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Runs unattended for years in embedded deployments with minimal tuning
- +Native TimeSeries type stores regular sensor/meter readings very compactly
- +Enterprise Replication enables multi-site active-active topologies
- +MongoDB wire listener lets document apps use Informix as a back end
Trade-offs
- −Small and ageing community; few new tools target it
- −Docker Hub developer image is no longer updated
- −Unclear long-term investment compared with Db2
Great for
- +Retail store and point-of-sale back ends
- +Smart-meter and utility time-series data
- +Telecom provisioning systems
- +Embedded databases inside OEM appliances
Think twice for
- −Greenfield cloud-native projects
- −Analytics at warehouse scale
- −Teams needing a large hiring pool

Is IBM Informix open source?
No. IBM Informix is proprietary, closed-source software.
Does IBM Informix support ACID transactions?
Yes. IBM Informix supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.
Does IBM Informix scale horizontally?
IBM Informix scales horizontally through an official extension, proxy or edition rather than in the core engine. It is comfortable at medium scale (≤ 10 TB). It supports active-active multi-region writes.
How can I run IBM Informix?
You can self-host it.
What is IBM Informix best for?
IBM Informix is a strong fit for retail store and point-of-sale back ends; smart-meter and utility time-series data; and telecom provisioning systems. Think twice for greenfield cloud-native projects.
What are the best alternatives to IBM Informix?
Common alternatives to IBM Informix include IBM Db2, PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is IBM Informix?
IBM Informix ranks #115 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (26.0/100), and #37 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
