Doltgres
activeby DoltHub · since 2023 · also known as DoltgreSQL
Version-controlled SQL database with PostgreSQL compatibility: branch, diff and merge your tables.
Overview
Doltgres (DoltgreSQL) is DoltHub's PostgreSQL-flavored sibling of Dolt. It reuses Dolt's prolly-tree storage engine and Git-style commit graph, but speaks the PostgreSQL wire protocol and dialect, so psql, Postgres drivers and ORMs can connect while you branch, diff, merge and time-travel over tables with SQL functions. It reached 1.0 in August 2026 and DoltHub now calls it production-ready, though its Postgres coverage (extensions, some types and catalog behavior) is still narrower than real PostgreSQL. It suits teams in the Postgres ecosystem that need data versioning and review workflows more than raw throughput.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Git-style branch, diff and merge of tables from SQL
- +Point-in-time queries against any commit
- +Works with psql and standard Postgres drivers
- +Shares Dolt's mature versioned storage engine
- +Clone and push databases between remotes
Trade-offs
- −Only a subset of PostgreSQL extensions, types and catalog features
- −Slower than PostgreSQL for high-volume OLTP
- −Young 1.x product with a short production record
- −No horizontal scaling
Great for
- +Versioned reference data for Postgres-based apps
- +Reproducible ML datasets
- +Safe data migrations tested on branches
- +Agent or CI sandboxes that branch data
Think twice for
- −Apps relying on Postgres extensions such as PostGIS or pgvector
- −High-throughput transactional systems
- −Large analytical workloads

What is Doltgres?
Doltgres is a relational database by DoltHub, first released in 2023.
Is Doltgres open source?
Yes. Doltgres is open source. License: Apache License 2.0.
Does Doltgres support ACID transactions?
Yes. Doltgres supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.
Does Doltgres scale horizontally?
Doltgres does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at small scale (≤ 100 GB). It supports cross-region read replicas.
How can I run Doltgres?
You can self-host it.
What is Doltgres best for?
Doltgres is a strong fit for versioned reference data for Postgres-based apps, reproducible ML datasets and safe data migrations tested on branches. Think twice for apps relying on Postgres extensions such as PostGIS or pgvector.
What are the best alternatives to Doltgres?
Common alternatives to Doltgres include Dolt, PostgreSQL, Neon, Xata and Supabase. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is Doltgres?
Doltgres ranks #270 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (12.3/100), and #86 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
