Open-source Postgres platform with storage-level copy-on-write branching, scale-to-zero and anonymized clones.

Overview

Xata began as a serverless spreadsheet-like database with built-in search, but has since rebuilt itself as a PostgreSQL platform focused on development workflows. Its stack runs vanilla Postgres on Kubernetes (CloudNativePG) with storage-level copy-on-write branching, so a production-sized database can be cloned in seconds, optionally with PII anonymized, for previews, testing or AI agents. In April 2026 the core platform was open-sourced under Apache 2.0; Xata Cloud and bring-your-own-cloud deployments are paid, with the old free SaaS tier retired. It also maintains pgroll for zero-downtime, reversible schema migrations. Consider it when realistic staging data and branch-per-PR workflows matter more than a free tier.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Copy-on-write branches of large databases in seconds
  • +Built-in PII anonymization for realistic staging copies
  • +Runs unmodified Postgres, so extensions and tools work
  • +Open-source core plus BYOC option for data-residency needs
  • +pgroll enables reversible, zero-downtime schema migrations

Trade-offs

  • −No permanent free tier on the managed service
  • −Young platform after a full product pivot; old SDKs are deprecated
  • −Self-hosting requires running Kubernetes
  • −No horizontal write scaling or multi-region in the open-source edition

Great for

  • +Branch-per-pull-request preview databases with production-like data
  • +Safe environments for AI coding agents
  • +Testing migrations against anonymized production clones
  • +Postgres in your own cloud account with branching

Think twice for

  • −Free hobby projects
  • −Very high write throughput needing sharding
  • −Teams without Kubernetes skills wanting to self-host

What is Xata?

Xata is a relational database by Xata, first released in 2022.

Is Xata open source?

Yes. Xata is open source. License: Apache License 2.0 (open-source platform).

Does Xata support ACID transactions?

Yes. Xata supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does Xata scale horizontally?

Xata does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at medium scale (≤ 10 TB).

How can I run Xata?

You can self-host it, use the vendor's managed cloud and run it serverless. Managed offerings include Xata Cloud. It is available on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure and Hetzner.

What is Xata best for?

Xata is a strong fit for branch-per-pull-request preview databases with production-like data, safe environments for AI coding agents and testing migrations against anonymized production clones. Think twice for free hobby projects.

What are the best alternatives to Xata?

Common alternatives to Xata include Neon, Supabase, PlanetScale, Databricks Lakebase and Nile. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is Xata?

Xata ranks #345 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (7.4/100), and #109 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
