Apache HugeGraph
activeby Apache Software Foundation · since 2018 · also known as HugeGraph
Apache graph database from Baidu with Gremlin and Cypher, pluggable backends and a distributed store.
Overview
Apache HugeGraph is a property-graph database originally built at Baidu and donated to the Apache Software Foundation. It speaks Gremlin and openCypher, stores data in RocksDB for standalone setups or in its own distributed HStore (with a PD placement service) for scale-out, and ships a toolchain for loading, visualization and OLAP computing (Vermeer/Computer). The companion hugegraph-ai project adds GraphRAG and LLM integrations. It is popular in China for large knowledge and risk-control graphs; outside that community documentation is thinner and releases are infrequent (1.7.0 in November 2025).
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Apache-governed, fully open source with both Gremlin and openCypher
- +Distributed HStore backend scales to very large graphs
- +Complete toolchain: loader, Hubble UI, OLAP computing and GraphRAG via hugegraph-ai
Trade-offs
- −Infrequent releases and a smaller international community
- −Documentation is partially Chinese-first
- −Transactional guarantees are weaker than single-node ACID graph databases
Great for
- +Large knowledge graphs
- +Risk control and anti-fraud
- +Social relationship analysis
- +GraphRAG pipelines
Think twice for
- −Small embedded graphs
- −RDF/SPARQL workloads
- −Teams needing commercial support from the vendor

Is Apache HugeGraph open source?
Yes. Apache HugeGraph is open source. License: Apache License 2.0.
Does Apache HugeGraph support ACID transactions?
Partly. Apache HugeGraph offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with strong consistency.
Does Apache HugeGraph scale horizontally?
Apache HugeGraph scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB).
How can I run Apache HugeGraph?
You can self-host it.
What is Apache HugeGraph best for?
Apache HugeGraph is a strong fit for large knowledge graphs; risk control and anti-fraud; and social relationship analysis. Think twice for small embedded graphs.
What are the best alternatives to Apache HugeGraph?
Common alternatives to Apache HugeGraph include JanusGraph, NebulaGraph, Neo4j, TigerGraph and Galaxybase. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is Apache HugeGraph?
Apache HugeGraph ranks #314 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (9.3/100), and #25 among graph databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
