Overview

Triplit is a TypeScript database that runs both in the client (IndexedDB or memory) and on a server (SQLite, Durable Objects and others), syncing over websockets with optimistic local writes, relational-style queries with includes, schemas and role-based permissions. It aimed to give React, Vue, Svelte and Solid apps realtime, offline-capable data without writing a backend. Its last npm release was in July 2025, and co-founder Matt Linkous joined Supabase in October 2025 to work on sync integrations. The AGPL code remains on GitHub with little activity, so treat it as stalled.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Same query API on client and server with optimistic local writes
  • +Relational includes and schemas with role-based permissions
  • +Pluggable storage from IndexedDB to SQLite and Durable Objects

Trade-offs

  • −Development has stalled; no releases since mid-2025
  • −AGPL license is a hurdle for some commercial deployments
  • −Small community and uncertain hosted offering

Great for

  • +Existing Triplit apps
  • +Learning or prototyping local-first sync patterns

Think twice for

  • −New production projects needing an active vendor
  • −Large datasets or high write throughput

Triplit FAQ

What is Triplit?

Triplit is a document database by Aspen Cloud, Inc., first released in 2023.

Is Triplit open source?

Yes. Triplit is open source. License: GNU AGPL v3.0.

Does Triplit support ACID transactions?

Partly. Triplit offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with eventual consistency.

Does Triplit scale horizontally?

Triplit does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at small scale (≤ 100 GB).

How can I run Triplit?

You can self-host it and embed it in your application.

What is Triplit best for?

Triplit is a strong fit for existing Triplit apps and learning or prototyping local-first sync patterns. Think twice for new production projects needing an active vendor.

What are the best alternatives to Triplit?

Common alternatives to Triplit include InstantDB, Jazz, Zero (Rocicorp), ElectricSQL and PowerSync. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

Is Triplit still maintained?

Triplit is in maintenance mode. No releases since July 2025; co-founder joined Supabase (Oct 2025) and the project website was unreachable during verification. Code stays AGPL on GitHub.

How popular is Triplit?

Triplit ranks #173 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (19.2/100), and #20 among document databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
