Brazilian serverless analytics database-as-a-service with SQL and an HTTP insert API; no longer operating.

Overview

SlicingDice was a hosted analytical database from the Sao Paulo startup holding Simbiose Ventures, sold as a serverless data warehouse: you pushed events through a REST insert API, queried with SQL or a JSON query API, and paid per gigabyte stored with queries included. It targeted product analytics and dashboards for teams that did not want to run their own warehouse, and shipped official client SDKs for several languages. The company was still promoting it at SXSW in 2019, but its SDKs stopped being updated in December 2018, the API and console hosts no longer resolve, and slicingdice.com now serves a generic WordPress blog. Treat it as discontinued.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Per-GB pricing with queries included made dashboard-heavy workloads predictable (historically)
  • +SQL plus a simple HTTP insert API with no servers to manage

Trade-offs

  • −Service no longer operates
  • −Hosted-only and proprietary, so there was no self-hosted fallback
  • −Little public documentation survives

Great for

  • +Historical reference only
  • +Example of per-GB serverless warehouse pricing

Think twice for

  • −Any production workload: the service is gone
