Embedded object and document database for .NET, Xamarin and Unity with LINQ queries; now inactive.

Overview

Siaqodb was an embedded NoSQL object database for .NET from CCSTM Computing, aimed at desktop, mobile and game developers. It stored POCO object graphs either object by object or as whole documents, queried them through a full LINQ provider, supported partial and eager loading, async APIs and pluggable encryption, and in its last versions used LMDB as an ACID storage engine. It ran on .NET, Mono/MonoMac, UWP, Xamarin.iOS, Xamarin.Android and Unity3D, and a sync add-on replicated client data to CouchDB, MongoDB or Azure Table storage. After the company stopped trading the source was published on GitHub under MIT in 2020-2021, with a final NuGet release (5.5.0.12) in March 2021; nothing has happened since.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Stores plain .NET object graphs with no mapping layer
  • +Full LINQ provider and async API
  • +Ran across desktop, Xamarin mobile and Unity games
  • +Optional sync to CouchDB, MongoDB or Azure storage

Trade-offs

  • −Unmaintained since 2021; targets the Xamarin era rather than modern .NET MAUI
  • −Small user base and sparse documentation
  • −.NET-only

Great for

  • +Maintaining older Xamarin or Unity apps built on Siaqodb
  • +Studying LINQ-native embedded object stores

Think twice for

  • −New .NET or mobile projects
  • −Server-side or multi-user databases

Siaqodb FAQ

What is Siaqodb?

Siaqodb is an object database by CCSTM Computing LLC, first released in 2009.

Is Siaqodb open source?

Yes. Siaqodb is open source. License: MIT License (since 2021; previously commercial).

Does Siaqodb support ACID transactions?

Yes. Siaqodb supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does Siaqodb scale horizontally?

Siaqodb does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at small scale (≤ 100 GB).

How can I run Siaqodb?

You can self-host it and embed it in your application.

What is Siaqodb best for?

Siaqodb is a strong fit for maintaining older Xamarin or Unity apps built on Siaqodb and studying LINQ-native embedded object stores. Think twice for new .NET or mobile projects.

What are the best alternatives to Siaqodb?

Common alternatives to Siaqodb include LiteDB, Realm (Atlas Device SDK), SQLite, ObjectBox and Couchbase Lite. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

Is Siaqodb still maintained?

Siaqodb is discontinued. Vendor ceased operations; source released under MIT in 2021 with no activity since. For embedded .NET storage use LiteDB, Realm or SQLite.

How popular is Siaqodb?

Siaqodb ranks #653 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (0.4/100), and #24 among object databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
