Overview

Sedna was a native XML database developed at the Institute for System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was notable for full ACID transactions, an XQuery implementation with XUpdate-style updates, triggers, full-text indexing and a custom memory-mapped storage layer designed for large XML documents. It had a real following in the late 2000s as a free, transactional alternative to commercial XML stores. Development stopped around 2011, the public GitHub mirror has not changed since 2017 and the project site is offline, so new XML work should use BaseX or eXist-db.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Full ACID transactions for XML updates
  • +XQuery triggers and full-text indexes
  • +Designed to handle very large individual XML documents

Trade-offs

  • −Abandoned: no security fixes, packages or maintained drivers
  • −Builds poorly on modern toolchains
  • −No community left to answer questions

Great for

  • +Maintaining legacy systems that still embed Sedna
  • +Historical reference for XML DBMS design

Think twice for

  • −Any new project
  • −Internet-facing deployments

Sedna FAQ

What is Sedna?

Sedna is a XML database by Institute for System Programming, Russian Academy of Sciences (MODIS team), first released in 2006.

Is Sedna open source?

Yes. Sedna is open source. License: Apache License 2.0.

Does Sedna support ACID transactions?

Yes. Sedna supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does Sedna scale horizontally?

Sedna does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at small scale (≤ 100 GB).

How can I run Sedna?

You can self-host it.

What is Sedna best for?

Sedna is a strong fit for maintaining legacy systems that still embed Sedna and historical reference for XML DBMS design. Think twice for any new project.

What are the best alternatives to Sedna?

Common alternatives to Sedna include BaseX, eXist-db, MarkLogic, Apache Jackrabbit and SirixDB. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

Is Sedna still maintained?

Sedna is discontinued. No releases since about 2011; the GitHub mirror is untouched since 2017 and sedna.org is offline. Use BaseX or eXist-db instead.

How popular is Sedna?

Sedna ranks #516 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (1.8/100), and #3 among XML databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
