PuppyGraph
activeby PuppyGraph, Inc. · since 2023
Zero-ETL graph query engine that runs Cypher and Gremlin directly on your lakehouse and SQL tables.
Overview
PuppyGraph is a graph query engine rather than a graph store: you map existing tables in Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hudi, Postgres, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, DuckDB and others to a graph schema, and it answers openCypher and Gremlin queries against them in place, with no data copy. A distributed, vectorized execution engine targets multi-hop queries over very large tables. It fits organizations that want graph analytics over data already in a lakehouse or warehouse without running ETL into a separate graph database. It is read-only, and latency depends on the underlying sources.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +No ETL: queries graph structure directly over Iceberg, Delta, Postgres, Snowflake and more
- +One copy of data avoids sync drift between warehouse and graph database
- +Speaks both openCypher and Gremlin, so standard drivers and tools work
- +Pricing is by compute, not stored data volume
Trade-offs
- −Read-only engine; writes go through the source systems
- −Latency depends on the source table formats and partitioning
- −Closed source and young product with frequent breaking changes in 0.x/1.x
Great for
- +Graph analytics over a lakehouse
- +Cybersecurity and log relationship analysis
- +Fraud detection on warehouse data
- +Supply-chain lineage across existing tables
Think twice for
- −Transactional graph writes
- −Embedded or offline apps
- −RDF/SPARQL workloads

What is PuppyGraph?
PuppyGraph is a graph database by PuppyGraph, Inc., first released in 2023.
Is PuppyGraph open source?
No. PuppyGraph is proprietary, closed-source software.
Does PuppyGraph support ACID transactions?
No. PuppyGraph does not provide ACID transactions; its consistency model is eventual.
Does PuppyGraph scale horizontally?
PuppyGraph scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB).
How can I run PuppyGraph?
You can self-host it. It is available on AWS.
What is PuppyGraph best for?
PuppyGraph is a strong fit for graph analytics over a lakehouse; cybersecurity and log relationship analysis; and fraud detection on warehouse data. Think twice for transactional graph writes.
What are the best alternatives to PuppyGraph?
Common alternatives to PuppyGraph include Neo4j, TigerGraph, Amazon Neptune Analytics, Apache AGE and Kùzu. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is PuppyGraph?
PuppyGraph ranks #380 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (5.6/100), and #28 among graph databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
