Postgres Pro
activeby Postgres Professional · since 2016 · also known as Postgres Pro Standard, Postgres Pro Enterprise, PostgresPro
Russian commercial PostgreSQL distribution with multimaster, 64-bit XIDs and compressed storage.
Overview
Postgres Pro is a family of PostgreSQL-based distributions from Postgres Professional, the Moscow company founded in 2015 by long-time PostgreSQL core contributors. Standard tracks upstream with extra extensions, while Enterprise adds substantial engine changes: 64-bit transaction IDs (no wraparound), the CFS compressed file system, multimaster replication, autonomous transactions, built-in connection pooling and improved partitioning and locking. It is certified for Russian regulatory requirements and widely used in Russian government, banking and import-substitution projects, which also limits its availability and support in many Western markets.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +64-bit XIDs in Enterprise remove transaction-wraparound emergencies
- +CFS page compression shrinks storage for large databases
- +Multimaster cluster for synchronous HA writes
- +Built by core PostgreSQL contributors who upstream many features
- +Certified for Russian security and import-substitution requirements
Trade-offs
- −Proprietary license and vendor lock-in for Enterprise-only features
- −Sanctions and geography limit procurement and support outside Russia/CIS
- −Few managed cloud offerings on global hyperscalers
- −Enterprise on-disk format diverges from community PostgreSQL
Great for
- +Russian government and banking systems
- +Oracle replacement under import-substitution programs
- +Very large OLTP databases hitting XID wraparound limits
- +HA clusters with synchronous multimaster
Think twice for
- −Organizations outside Russia/CIS needing vendor support
- −Teams wanting pure open-source PostgreSQL
- −Global multi-cloud managed deployments

Is Postgres Pro open source?
No. Postgres Pro is proprietary, closed-source software. License: Postgres Pro commercial license.
Does Postgres Pro support ACID transactions?
Yes. Postgres Pro supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.
Does Postgres Pro scale horizontally?
Postgres Pro scales horizontally through an official extension, proxy or edition rather than in the core engine. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB). It supports active-active multi-region writes.
How can I run Postgres Pro?
You can self-host it.
What is Postgres Pro best for?
Postgres Pro is a strong fit for russian government and banking systems; oracle replacement under import-substitution programs; and very large OLTP databases hitting XID wraparound limits. Think twice for organizations outside Russia/CIS needing vendor support.
What are the best alternatives to Postgres Pro?
Common alternatives to Postgres Pro include PostgreSQL, EDB Postgres Advanced Server, openGauss, pgEdge and Oracle Database. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is Postgres Pro?
Postgres Pro has little measurable public adoption today, so it ranks near the bottom of the WhichDB Score.
