Oracle Autonomous Database

Self-driving Oracle Database on Exadata: auto-patching, auto-scaling, and Select AI, on OCI and other clouds.

Overview

Oracle Autonomous Database is the fully managed, serverless form of Oracle Database running on Exadata infrastructure, where Oracle handles provisioning, patching, tuning, backups and scaling. It comes in transaction-processing, JSON and data-warehouse flavours; in October 2025 it was rebranded Autonomous AI Database, with Autonomous Data Warehouse becoming Autonomous AI Lakehouse with Iceberg support. Because it is real Oracle Database 26ai underneath, it includes vector search, Select AI (natural language to SQL), graph and JSON Duality. It is the lowest-effort way to run Oracle workloads in the cloud and is now offered inside Azure, AWS and Google Cloud too, but costs and lock-in remain Oracle-shaped.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Oracle handles patching, tuning, indexing, backups and scaling automatically
  • +Full Oracle Database feature set, including vectors, graph and JSON Duality, without licence options sprawl
  • +Per-second auto-scaling of compute on Exadata hardware
  • +Available inside Azure, AWS and Google Cloud regions as well as OCI
  • +Always Free tier makes it easy to try

Trade-offs

  • −Less control over parameters, versions and maintenance windows than self-managed Oracle
  • −Costs can climb quickly with auto-scaling and large storage
  • −Deep Oracle lock-in

Great for

  • +Moving existing Oracle applications to a managed cloud service
  • +Departmental data warehouses and lakehouses with Iceberg
  • +Natural-language querying and RAG over enterprise data
  • +APEX low-code applications

Think twice for

  • −Teams avoiding Oracle licensing and lock-in
  • −Workloads requiring custom database parameters or OS access
  • −Small apps where serverless Postgres is cheaper

Oracle Autonomous Database FAQ

What is Oracle Autonomous Database?

Oracle Autonomous Database is a relational database by Oracle Corporation, first released in 2018.

Is Oracle Autonomous Database open source?

No. Oracle Autonomous Database is proprietary, closed-source software.

Does Oracle Autonomous Database support ACID transactions?

Yes. Oracle Autonomous Database supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does Oracle Autonomous Database scale horizontally?

Oracle Autonomous Database scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB). It supports cross-region read replicas.

How can I run Oracle Autonomous Database?

You can use the vendor's managed cloud and run it serverless. Managed offerings include Autonomous AI Database Serverless and Oracle Database@Azure (Autonomous). It is available on Oracle Cloud, Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.

What is Oracle Autonomous Database best for?

Oracle Autonomous Database is a strong fit for moving existing Oracle applications to a managed cloud service; departmental data warehouses and lakehouses with Iceberg; and natural-language querying and RAG over enterprise data. Think twice for teams avoiding Oracle licensing and lock-in.

What are the best alternatives to Oracle Autonomous Database?

Common alternatives to Oracle Autonomous Database include Oracle Database, Snowflake, Amazon Aurora, Azure SQL Database and Google BigQuery. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is Oracle Autonomous Database?

Oracle Autonomous Database has little measurable public adoption today, so it ranks near the bottom of the WhichDB Score.
