MotherDuck
activeby MotherDuck · since 2023
Serverless cloud data warehouse built on DuckDB, with hybrid local-plus-cloud execution.
Overview
MotherDuck runs DuckDB as a managed, serverless service: each user gets an isolated 'duckling' compute instance over cloud storage, and the same DuckDB client on a laptop or in the browser (WASM) can join local data with cloud tables in one query. It is aimed at the large majority of analytics workloads that fit comfortably on one big machine, trading distributed-warehouse complexity for simplicity and low cost. Database sharing, DuckLake support and SQL AI functions round it out. It is still a young service, AWS-only, and inherits DuckDB's single-node ceiling per query.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Same DuckDB SQL locally and in the cloud; hybrid queries join laptop and cloud data
- +Per-user isolated compute avoids noisy-neighbour contention
- +Very low cost and fast start for small-to-medium analytics
- +WASM SDK enables in-browser analytics apps backed by cloud data
- +Simple sharing of databases across users and organizations
Trade-offs
- −Single-node execution per query limits very large joins
- −Runs only on AWS in a few regions
- −Younger ecosystem with fewer enterprise governance features
- −Proprietary service on top of open-source DuckDB
Great for
- +Startup and team data warehouse
- +Embedded analytics in SaaS apps
- +Hybrid local/cloud data exploration
- +Serving DuckDB-based dashboards
Think twice for
- −Multi-petabyte warehouses
- −High-concurrency OLTP
- −Strict multi-cloud or on-prem requirements

Is MotherDuck open source?
No. MotherDuck is proprietary, closed-source software.
Does MotherDuck support ACID transactions?
Yes. MotherDuck supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.
Does MotherDuck scale horizontally?
MotherDuck does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at medium scale (≤ 10 TB).
How can I run MotherDuck?
You can use the vendor's managed cloud and run it serverless. It is available on AWS.
What is MotherDuck best for?
MotherDuck is a strong fit for startup and team data warehouse; embedded analytics in SaaS apps; and hybrid local/cloud data exploration. Think twice for multi-petabyte warehouses.
What are the best alternatives to MotherDuck?
Common alternatives to MotherDuck include DuckDB, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, ClickHouse and Tinybird. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is MotherDuck?
MotherDuck ranks #52 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (37.7/100), and #6 among columnar / OLAP databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
