Manticore Search
activeby Manticore Software · since 2017 · also known as Manticore
Fast SQL-first search database, forked from Sphinx, with columnar storage and vector KNN.
Overview
Manticore Search forked from Sphinx 2.3 in 2017 and has since become a full search database: real-time tables, a MySQL-protocol SQL interface, an Elasticsearch-like JSON API, columnar storage, joins and HNSW vector search. It is noticeably lighter on resources than Elasticsearch and often faster for full-text and log-style queries on a single box. Replication is Galera-based and distribution across nodes is done with distributed tables. A good fit if you like SQL, want an open-source (GPL-3.0) engine, and do not need the Elastic ecosystem.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Low memory footprint and fast full-text queries on modest hardware
- +Talk to it with any MySQL client using SQL
- +Columnar library for analytics-style filters and aggregations
- +HNSW KNN vector search plus auto-embeddings
- +Fully open source under GPL with no enterprise-only core
Trade-offs
- −Sharding is manual via distributed tables
- −Smaller community and integrations than Elasticsearch
- −Elasticsearch API compatibility is partial
- −Documentation can lag the rapid release cadence
Great for
- +Site and product search with SQL
- +Log search on a budget
- +Replacing legacy Sphinx installs
- +Hybrid keyword plus vector search
Think twice for
- −Teams needing automatic elastic sharding
- −Heavy reliance on Kibana-style tooling
- −Transactional OLTP

Is Manticore Search open source?
Yes. Manticore Search is open source. License: GNU GPL v3.
Does Manticore Search support ACID transactions?
Partly. Manticore Search offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with strong consistency.
Does Manticore Search scale horizontally?
Manticore Search has no built-in sharding; scaling out means partitioning data in your application. It is comfortable at medium scale (≤ 10 TB).
How can I run Manticore Search?
You can self-host it.
What is Manticore Search best for?
Manticore Search is a strong fit for site and product search with SQL; log search on a budget; and replacing legacy Sphinx installs. Think twice for teams needing automatic elastic sharding.
What are the best alternatives to Manticore Search?
