Embedded, serverless retrieval database on the Lance columnar format for multimodal AI data.

vectorcolumnar / olapsearch enginedatabase engineopen source (permissive)growing

Overview

LanceDB is a Rust retrieval engine built on Lance, an open columnar file format designed for ML data with fast random access and versioning. The open-source library runs embedded in Python, TypeScript or Rust and reads directly from local disk or object storage, so there is no server to run; LanceDB Cloud and Enterprise add a serverless/distributed service and a 'multimodal lakehouse' for feature engineering. It supports vector, full-text (BM25) and scalar-indexed search, zero-copy schema evolution and time travel across table versions. Especially strong when the same data feeds training pipelines and retrieval.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +No server: embed it and point it at local disk or object storage
  • +Lance format is efficient for both training scans and random-access retrieval
  • +Versioned tables with time travel and zero-copy column additions
  • +Vector, BM25 full-text and scalar indexes together
  • +Handles images, video and other blobs alongside embeddings

Trade-offs

  • −Concurrent writers to the same table need care in OSS
  • −Fast-moving 0.x API with frequent breaking changes
  • −Distributed serving is a paid Cloud/Enterprise feature
  • −Object-storage latency can hurt tail latency without caching

Great for

  • +Embedded RAG in desktop, CLI and agent apps
  • +Multimodal datasets shared by training and retrieval
  • +Agent memory stores
  • +Serverless vector search over S3

Think twice for

  • −High-concurrency transactional writes
  • −Teams wanting a classic client-server DB they can SSH into
  • −Relational joins-heavy workloads

LanceDB FAQ

What is LanceDB?

LanceDB is a vector database by LanceDB, Inc., first released in 2023.

Is LanceDB open source?

Yes. LanceDB is open source. License: Apache License 2.0.

Does LanceDB support ACID transactions?

Partly. LanceDB offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with strong consistency.

Does LanceDB scale horizontally?

LanceDB scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB).

How can I run LanceDB?

You can self-host it, embed it in your application, use the vendor's managed cloud and run it serverless. Managed offerings include LanceDB Cloud. It is available on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.

What is LanceDB best for?

LanceDB is a strong fit for embedded RAG in desktop, CLI and agent apps; multimodal datasets shared by training and retrieval; and agent memory stores. Think twice for high-concurrency transactional writes.

What are the best alternatives to LanceDB?

Common alternatives to LanceDB include Chroma, Qdrant, turbopuffer, DuckDB and Milvus. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is LanceDB?

LanceDB ranks #102 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (27.5/100), and #8 among vector databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
