InterSystems IRIS

active

by InterSystems Corporation · since 2018 · also known as IRIS, IRIS for Health, IRIS data platform

Multi-model data platform (SQL, objects, globals, vectors) with built-in interoperability, big in healthcare.

Overview

InterSystems IRIS is the successor to Caché: a single engine whose storage layer is a fast, sparse multidimensional array ('globals') projected simultaneously as SQL tables, objects and JSON documents. On top it bundles an integration engine, FHIR/HL7 tooling (IRIS for Health), embedded Python, columnar storage, sharding and, since 2024, vector search for RAG. That combination makes it dominant in hospital records and health information exchange, including Epic's Chronicles database. It ships as Extended Maintenance releases (2026.1 in March 2026) and quarterly Continuous Delivery releases (2026.2 in July 2026). The trade-offs are proprietary ObjectScript, opaque pricing and a niche talent pool.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +One storage engine exposed as SQL, objects, documents and raw globals without duplication
  • +Bundled interoperability engine and FHIR/HL7 tooling for healthcare integration
  • +Very high transaction ingest rates on modest hardware
  • +Embedded Python and vector search run next to the data for ML and RAG
  • +Mirroring gives straightforward automatic failover

Trade-offs

  • −ObjectScript and globals are proprietary skills with a small talent pool
  • −Opaque, sales-led pricing
  • −Community Edition limits make realistic testing awkward
  • −Tooling ecosystem is much smaller than mainstream RDBMSs

Great for

  • +Electronic health records and hospital information systems
  • +Health information exchanges and FHIR servers
  • +High-throughput financial transaction processing
  • +Supply-chain and logistics platforms needing integration plus analytics

Think twice for

  • −Teams wanting open-source licensing
  • −Simple web CRUD apps
  • −Organisations without access to InterSystems skills

InterSystems IRIS FAQ

What is InterSystems IRIS?

InterSystems IRIS is a relational database by InterSystems Corporation, first released in 2018.

Is InterSystems IRIS open source?

No. InterSystems IRIS is proprietary, closed-source software.

Does InterSystems IRIS support ACID transactions?

Yes. InterSystems IRIS supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.

Does InterSystems IRIS scale horizontally?

InterSystems IRIS scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB). It supports cross-region read replicas.

How can I run InterSystems IRIS?

You can self-host it and use the vendor's managed cloud. Managed offerings include InterSystems IRIS Cloud SQL. It is available on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.

What is InterSystems IRIS best for?

InterSystems IRIS is a strong fit for electronic health records and hospital information systems; health information exchanges and FHIR servers; and high-throughput financial transaction processing. Think twice for teams wanting open-source licensing.

What are the best alternatives to InterSystems IRIS?

Common alternatives to InterSystems IRIS include InterSystems Caché, Oracle Database, PostgreSQL, YottaDB and MongoDB. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is InterSystems IRIS?

InterSystems IRIS ranks #253 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (13.3/100), and #79 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
