Overview

Cloud SQL is Google Cloud's managed service for MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL Server. It automates provisioning, patching, backups, point-in-time recovery, high availability with a regional standby, and cross-region read replicas, and it connects to the rest of GCP through the Cloud SQL Auth Proxy, IAM database authentication and language connectors. The Enterprise Plus edition adds a data cache on local SSD, near-zero-downtime maintenance and faster failover. It covers most standard OLTP needs on Google Cloud; teams that need higher Postgres throughput or built-in analytics usually step up to AlloyDB, and those that need horizontal write scale go to Spanner.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Stock MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL Server with simple operations
  • +Enterprise Plus edition: local-SSD data cache and near-zero-downtime maintenance
  • +IAM database authentication and Auth Proxy for secure connectivity
  • +pgvector and MySQL vector support for AI features
  • +Tight integration with GKE, Cloud Run and BigQuery federation

Trade-offs

  • −Vertical scaling only
  • −Google Cloud only
  • −Extension allowlist and no superuser access
  • −Throughput lags AlloyDB for demanding Postgres workloads

Great for

  • +Standard web and mobile backends on Google Cloud
  • +Migrating on-prem MySQL, Postgres or SQL Server to GCP
  • +Cloud Run and GKE application databases
  • +WordPress and CMS hosting

Think twice for

  • −Horizontal write scaling (use Spanner)
  • −Heavy HTAP workloads (use AlloyDB)
  • −Scale-to-zero dev databases

Google Cloud SQL FAQ

What is Google Cloud SQL?

Google Cloud SQL is a relational database by Google, first released in 2011.

Is Google Cloud SQL open source?

No. Google Cloud SQL is proprietary, closed-source software.

Does Google Cloud SQL support ACID transactions?

Yes. Google Cloud SQL supports full ACID transactions, with strong, eventual consistency.

Does Google Cloud SQL scale horizontally?

Google Cloud SQL does not scale horizontally; it runs on a single node, so you scale it up rather than out. It is comfortable at medium scale (≤ 10 TB). It supports cross-region read replicas.

How can I run Google Cloud SQL?

You can use the vendor's managed cloud. Managed offerings include Cloud SQL. It is available on Google Cloud.

What is Google Cloud SQL best for?

Google Cloud SQL is a strong fit for standard web and mobile backends on Google Cloud; migrating on-prem MySQL, Postgres or SQL Server to GCP; and cloud Run and GKE application databases. Think twice for horizontal write scaling (use Spanner).

What are the best alternatives to Google Cloud SQL?

Common alternatives to Google Cloud SQL include Amazon RDS, AlloyDB for PostgreSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Google Cloud Spanner and Neon. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is Google Cloud SQL?

Google Cloud SQL ranks #292 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (10.9/100), and #93 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
