Pure C# embedded SQL engine modelled on HSQLDB, with Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 builds; dead since 2012.

Overview

EffiProz was an embedded relational database written entirely in C#, with an SQL dialect and feature set closely tracking HSQLDB 1.9/2.0. It ran in-process in .NET, Silverlight 4 and Windows Phone 7 applications, shipped an ADO.NET and Entity Framework provider with Visual Studio 2010 designer support, and let developers write stored functions, aggregates and table-valued functions in CLR languages. A Ms-PL community edition lived on CodePlex alongside commercial builds, and the company was a 2010 Red Herring Global 100 winner. Development stopped around 2012; effiproz.com now hosts unrelated spam, so use the archived CodePlex pages for reference. SQLite (Microsoft.Data.Sqlite) or LiteDB cover the same embedded .NET niche today.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Fully managed C# code: no native binaries, so it ran inside the Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 sandboxes
  • +Rich SQL inherited from HSQLDB, plus CLR user-defined functions, aggregates and TVFs
  • +Entity Framework provider and Visual Studio 2010 tooling

Trade-offs

  • −Dead since about 2012; targets platforms (Silverlight, WP7) that are themselves gone
  • −Original site and source host have disappeared
  • −Small user base; little documentation survives

Great for

  • +Historical reference for managed-code embedded SQL engines
  • +Maintaining very old Silverlight or WP7 apps that bundled it

Think twice for

  • −New .NET applications
  • −Multi-user server deployments
