Databend
activeby Databend Labs · since 2021
Rust-built cloud data warehouse on object storage, open source with a managed Databend Cloud.
Overview
Databend is an open-source, Snowflake-style warehouse written in Rust: stateless compute clusters over data stored in S3-compatible object storage, with elastic scaling and a vectorized engine. It supports a VARIANT type for semi-structured data, time travel, streams for change capture, inverted, vector and spatial indexes, and recently table branching. Databend Cloud is the managed version, and the self-hosted edition is attractive for teams that want a warehouse on their own object storage. Its community is smaller, and stable releases follow a fast-moving nightly train.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Warehouse on your own S3 with stateless, elastic compute
- +Rust implementation with a vectorized engine and low resource overhead
- +Time travel, streams and table branching built in
- +VARIANT type plus inverted and vector indexes in one engine
- +Open source with a matching managed cloud
Trade-offs
- −Smaller community and ecosystem than Snowflake or ClickHouse
- −Rapid release train with nightly builds; stable patch line is less visible
- −Some enterprise features are under a non-OSS license
Great for
- +Self-hosted cloud data warehouse
- +Lakehouse analytics on object storage
- +Log and event analytics
- +Cost-sensitive Snowflake alternative
Think twice for
- −OLTP
- −Workloads needing a large third-party ecosystem
- −Embedded single-process use

What is Databend?
Databend is a columnar / OLAP database by Databend Labs, first released in 2021.
Is Databend open source?
Yes. Databend is open source. License: Apache License 2.0 (enterprise features under ELv2).
Does Databend support ACID transactions?
Yes. Databend supports full ACID transactions, with strong consistency.
Does Databend scale horizontally?
Databend scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB).
How can I run Databend?
You can self-host it, use the vendor's managed cloud and run it serverless. It is available on AWS.
What is Databend best for?
Databend is a strong fit for self-hosted cloud data warehouse; lakehouse analytics on object storage; and log and event analytics. Think twice for OLTP.
What are the best alternatives to Databend?
Common alternatives to Databend include Snowflake, ClickHouse, StarRocks, Apache Doris and DuckDB. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is Databend?
Databend ranks #214 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (15.4/100), and #23 among columnar / OLAP databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
