Overview

Azure Synapse Analytics, the 2019 rebrand of Azure SQL Data Warehouse, bundles a provisioned MPP warehouse (dedicated SQL pools with clustered columnstore and hash distribution), a pay-per-TB serverless SQL endpoint over the data lake, Apache Spark pools and pipelines in one workspace. It still runs many large enterprise warehouses, but Microsoft now steers new analytics investment to Microsoft Fabric, and parts of Synapse (Data Explorer pools, Synapse Link for Cosmos DB) have retirement dates. Treat it as a stable platform for existing estates rather than a starting point for new projects.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Mature MPP engine with clustered columnstore, workload management and result-set caching
  • +Serverless SQL queries Parquet/Delta/CSV in ADLS with no infrastructure
  • +Dedicated pools can be paused to stop compute charges
  • +Familiar T-SQL and SQL Server tooling (SSMS, SSDT)
  • +Tight integration with Azure AD, Purview and Power BI

Trade-offs

  • −Microsoft's strategic focus has moved to Fabric; little new feature work
  • −Dedicated pools need manual distribution, indexing and scaling decisions
  • −Limited T-SQL surface compared with SQL Server
  • −Concurrency caps on dedicated pools (max 128 concurrent queries)

Great for

  • +Existing Azure enterprise data warehouses
  • +Ad-hoc SQL over data lake files
  • +Lift-and-shift from SQL Server PDW/APS

Think twice for

  • −New greenfield analytics platforms on Azure (prefer Fabric)
  • −Low-latency or high-concurrency apps
  • −Multi-cloud deployments

Azure Synapse Analytics FAQ

What is Azure Synapse Analytics?

Azure Synapse Analytics is a columnar / OLAP database by Microsoft, first released in 2016.

Is Azure Synapse Analytics open source?

No. Azure Synapse Analytics is proprietary, closed-source software.

Does Azure Synapse Analytics support ACID transactions?

Partly. Azure Synapse Analytics offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with strong consistency.

Does Azure Synapse Analytics scale horizontally?

Azure Synapse Analytics scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at large scale (≤ 1 PB). It supports cross-region read replicas.

How can I run Azure Synapse Analytics?

You can use the vendor's managed cloud and run it serverless. It is available on Azure.

What is Azure Synapse Analytics best for?

Azure Synapse Analytics is a strong fit for existing Azure enterprise data warehouses, ad-hoc SQL over data lake files and lift-and-shift from SQL Server PDW/APS. Think twice for new greenfield analytics platforms on Azure (prefer Fabric).

What are the best alternatives to Azure Synapse Analytics?

Common alternatives to Azure Synapse Analytics include Microsoft Fabric Data Warehouse, Databricks SQL, Snowflake, Google BigQuery and Amazon Redshift. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

Is Azure Synapse Analytics still maintained?

Azure Synapse Analytics is in maintenance mode. No retirement date for Synapse itself, but Microsoft directs new investment to Microsoft Fabric; Data Explorer pools retired Oct 2025 and Synapse Link for Cosmos DB ends 2029.

How popular is Azure Synapse Analytics?

Azure Synapse Analytics ranks #343 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (7.4/100), and #33 among columnar / OLAP databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
