Azure AI Search
activeby Microsoft · since 2015 · also known as Azure Cognitive Search, Azure Search
Microsoft's managed search service for full-text, vector, hybrid and agentic retrieval on Azure.
Overview
Azure AI Search (formerly Azure Search, then Azure Cognitive Search) is a fully managed retrieval service on Azure. It indexes JSON documents with inverted and vector indexes, adds hybrid ranking with a semantic reranker, and can chunk and vectorize content during indexing through skillsets and Azure OpenAI. Its newer agentic retrieval mode plans and fans out sub-queries over knowledge bases, and it underpins Foundry IQ for Microsoft Foundry agents. Pick it when your data and identity already live in Azure; it is not available elsewhere.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- +Integrated vectorization: chunk and embed during indexing with Azure OpenAI
- +Hybrid search with a semantic reranker built in
- +Agentic retrieval over multiple knowledge sources for agents
- +Indexers pull from Blob, Cosmos DB, SharePoint, OneLake and SQL
- +Entra ID RBAC, Private Link and document-level security trimming
Trade-offs
- −Azure-only
- −Tier sizing and per-feature charges make costs hard to predict
- −Index schema changes often require full rebuilds
- −Less control over ranking internals than self-hosted engines
Great for
- +Enterprise RAG over SharePoint and Blob content
- +Copilot and Foundry agent grounding
- +Site and catalog search on Azure
- +Hybrid semantic search for internal knowledge bases
Think twice for
- −Multi-cloud or on-prem deployments
- −Log analytics
- −Cheap large-scale vector storage

How can I run Azure AI Search?
You can use the vendor's managed cloud. It is available on Azure.
What is Azure AI Search best for?
Azure AI Search is a strong fit for enterprise RAG over SharePoint and Blob content; copilot and Foundry agent grounding; and site and catalog search on Azure. Think twice for multi-cloud or on-prem deployments.
What are the best alternatives to Azure AI Search?
Common alternatives to Azure AI Search include Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Vertex AI Vector Search, Pinecone and Algolia. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.
How popular is Azure AI Search?
Azure AI Search ranks #70 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (32.4/100), and #7 among search engine databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
