Managed event and telemetry store with schema-on-read ingest and the piped APL query language.

columnar / olaptime-seriessearch enginemanaged serviceproprietarygrowing

Overview

Axiom is a fully managed platform for logs, traces, metrics and other event data, built on its own event store that keeps compressed data on object storage and separates ingest from query compute. Data is ingested without a schema and shaped at read time with APL, a piped query language modelled on Kusto, while a companion language, MPL, targets a dedicated metrics engine. It supports OpenTelemetry and common shippers, offers dashboards, monitors and an MCP server for AI agents, and prices by usage with a free personal tier and a bring-your-own-cloud option. It suits teams that want cheap retention of high-volume telemetry without operating a cluster; it is closed source and cloud-only.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +No cluster to operate; ingest scales without capacity planning
  • +Schema-on-read means new fields need no migrations
  • +APL is expressive for piped log and event analysis
  • +Low storage cost for long retention of high-volume telemetry
  • +Free tier generous enough for side projects

Trade-offs

  • −Closed source and cloud-only (BYOC aside)
  • −APL and MPL are proprietary query languages
  • −Usage-based pricing needs monitoring at very high query volume
  • −Smaller integration catalogue than Datadog or Splunk

Great for

  • +Application and serverless logs
  • +OpenTelemetry traces for startups
  • +Product and security event analytics
  • +Edge and CDN logs

Think twice for

  • −On-prem or air-gapped deployments
  • −Transactional data
  • −Teams requiring open-source tooling

Axiom FAQ

What is Axiom?

Axiom is a columnar / OLAP database by Axiom, Inc., first released in 2020.

Is Axiom open source?

No. Axiom is proprietary, closed-source software.

Does Axiom support ACID transactions?

No. Axiom does not provide ACID transactions; its consistency model is eventual.

Does Axiom scale horizontally?

Axiom scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at massive scale (Multi-PB).

How can I run Axiom?

You can use the vendor's managed cloud and run it serverless. It is available on AWS.

What is Axiom best for?

Axiom is a strong fit for application and serverless logs; OpenTelemetry traces for startups; and product and security event analytics. Think twice for on-prem or air-gapped deployments.

What are the best alternatives to Axiom?

Common alternatives to Axiom include Hydrolix, OpenObserve, SigNoz, Grafana Loki and Elasticsearch. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is Axiom?

Axiom ranks #290 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (10.9/100), and #30 among columnar / OLAP databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
