Spark's SQL and DataFrame engine for large-scale batch, streaming and lakehouse processing.

Overview

Spark SQL is the relational layer of Apache Spark: the Catalyst optimizer and Tungsten execution engine behind SQL, DataFrames and Structured Streaming. It reads and writes Parquet, ORC, Delta Lake, Iceberg and Hudi on object storage and is the workhorse of most lakehouse ETL. Spark 4.x brought ANSI SQL mode by default, the VARIANT type, SQL scripting, Spark Connect thin clients and declarative pipelines. Spark SQL excels at heavy, fault-tolerant transformations over huge data; for interactive BI latency, engines like Trino, Photon or StarRocks usually respond faster.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Industry-standard engine for large-scale ETL and lakehouse pipelines
  • +Same engine for batch SQL, DataFrames and Structured Streaming
  • +Reads and writes Delta, Iceberg, Hudi, Parquet and ORC
  • +Fault tolerance suits very long jobs over petabytes
  • +Available as a managed service on every major cloud

Trade-offs

  • −Higher query latency than MPP engines for interactive BI
  • −JVM tuning (memory, shuffle, partitions) is a skill in itself
  • −Not a database: no storage, indexes or concurrency control of its own
  • −Small-file and skew problems need active management

Great for

  • +Lakehouse ETL and ELT
  • +Batch feature engineering for ML
  • +Streaming ingestion into Delta/Iceberg
  • +Large-scale data cleaning and joins

Think twice for

  • −Sub-second dashboards
  • −OLTP
  • −Small datasets better served by DuckDB

Apache Spark SQL FAQ

What is Apache Spark SQL?

Apache Spark SQL is a relational database by Apache Software Foundation, first released in 2014.

Is Apache Spark SQL open source?

Yes. Apache Spark SQL is open source. License: Apache License 2.0.

Does Apache Spark SQL support ACID transactions?

Partly. Apache Spark SQL offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with strong consistency.

Does Apache Spark SQL scale horizontally?

Apache Spark SQL scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at massive scale (Multi-PB).

How can I run Apache Spark SQL?

You can self-host it. Managed offerings include Databricks, Amazon EMR and Google Cloud Dataproc. It is available on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Alibaba Cloud and Oracle Cloud.

What is Apache Spark SQL best for?

Apache Spark SQL is a strong fit for lakehouse ETL and ELT; batch feature engineering for ML; and streaming ingestion into Delta/Iceberg. Think twice for sub-second dashboards.

What are the best alternatives to Apache Spark SQL?

Common alternatives to Apache Spark SQL include Trino, Databricks SQL, Presto, Apache Hive and Apache DataFusion. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is Apache Spark SQL?

Apache Spark SQL ranks #26 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (50.3/100), and #8 among relational databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
