The open-source core of GemFire: a consistent, partitioned in-memory data grid for Java.

key-valueobjectdatabase engineopen source (permissive)mature

Overview

Apache Geode is the open-sourced core of GemFire, donated by Pivotal in 2015. It provides partitioned and replicated regions with strong consistency, OQL queries, continuous queries, function execution and WAN gateways between clusters. After development stalled and the PMC voted in 2024 to retire it, a group of contributors revived the project, shipping 1.15.2 in 2025 and a modernised 2.0 (Java 17, Jakarta EE 10) announced in January 2026, with 2.0.3 in September 2026. It is again usable, but most enterprise users get the same technology through Tanzu GemFire.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths

  • +Strong consistency within a cluster with synchronous redundant copies
  • +Continuous queries push matching changes to clients
  • +WAN gateways for multi-site replication
  • +Proven GemFire lineage in large financial deployments

Trade-offs

  • −Community nearly went to the Attic in 2024; contributor base is small
  • −Java-centric; limited modern client libraries
  • −Docker images and ecosystem tooling are dated
  • −Steep learning curve (regions, locators, gfsh)

Great for

  • +Low-latency, consistent caches for Java systems
  • +Open-source alternative to commercial GemFire
  • +Event notification via continuous queries

Think twice for

  • −Teams wanting a large, active community
  • −Polyglot or serverless stacks

Apache Geode FAQ

What is Apache Geode?

Apache Geode is a key-value database by Apache Software Foundation, first released in 2016.

Is Apache Geode open source?

Yes. Apache Geode is open source. License: Apache License 2.0.

Does Apache Geode support ACID transactions?

Partly. Apache Geode offers limited ACID guarantees (for example, single-record or single-partition transactions), with strong consistency.

Does Apache Geode scale horizontally?

Apache Geode scales horizontally out of the box, with built-in sharding or partitioning. It is comfortable at medium scale (≤ 10 TB). It supports active-active multi-region writes.

How can I run Apache Geode?

You can self-host it and embed it in your application.

What is Apache Geode best for?

Apache Geode is a strong fit for low-latency, consistent caches for Java systems; open-source alternative to commercial GemFire; and event notification via continuous queries. Think twice for teams wanting a large, active community.

What are the best alternatives to Apache Geode?

Common alternatives to Apache Geode include VMware Tanzu GemFire, Hazelcast, Apache Ignite, Oracle Coherence and Infinispan. The right choice depends on your workload, scale and hosting; WhichDB's smart match ranks them against your requirements.

How popular is Apache Geode?

Apache Geode ranks #279 of 844 databases on the WhichDB Score (11.7/100), and #37 among key-value databases. The score combines public adoption signals such as package downloads, GitHub activity, job posts and developer discussion.
